Covenants
Gen
9:1-17 (KJV). God's Covenant with Noah
And God blessed Noah
and his sons, and said unto them, Be fruitful, and
multiply, and replenish the earth. 2And the fear of you and the dread
of you shall be upon every beast of the earth, and upon every fowl of the air,
upon all that moveth upon the earth, and upon
all the fishes of the sea; into your hand are they delivered. 3Every
moving thing that liveth shall be meat for you; even
as the green herb have I given you all things. 4But flesh with the
life thereof, which is the blood thereof, shall ye not eat. 5And
surely your blood of your lives will I require; at the hand of every beast will
I require it, and at the hand of man; at the hand of every man’s brother will I
require the life of man. 6Whoso sheddeth
man’s blood, by man shall his blood be shed: for in
the image of God made he man. 7And you, be
ye fruitful, and multiply; bring forth abundantly in the earth, and multiply
therein.
8And God spake
unto Noah, and to his sons with him, saying, 9And I, behold, I
establish my covenant with you, and with your seed after you; 10And
with every living creature that is with you, of the fowl, of the cattle,
and of every beast of the earth with you; from all that go out of the ark, to
every beast of the earth. 11And I will establish my covenant with
you; neither shall all flesh be cut off any more by the waters of a flood;
neither shall there any more be a flood to destroy
the earth. 12And God said, This is
the token of the covenant which I make between me and you and every living
creature that is with you, for perpetual generations: 13I do
set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me
and the earth. 14And it shall come to pass, when I bring a cloud
over the earth, that the bow shall be seen in the cloud: 15And I
will remember my covenant, which is between me and you and every living
creature of all flesh; and the waters shall no more become a flood to destroy
all flesh. 16And the bow shall be in the cloud; and I will look upon
it, that I may remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living
creature of all flesh that is upon the earth. 17And God said
unto Noah, This is the token of the covenant, which I have established
between me and all flesh that is upon the earth.
Gen
12:1-10. The Call of Abram
Now the Lord had said
unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy
father’s house, unto a land that I will shew thee: 2And
I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name
great; and thou shalt be a blessing: 3And I will bless them that
bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in
thee shall all families of the earth be blessed. 4So Abram departed,
as the Lord had spoken unto him; and Lot went with him: and Abram was
seventy and five years old when he departed out of Haran. 5And Abram
took Sarai his wife, and Lot his brother’s son, and all their substance that
they had gathered, and the souls that they had gotten in Haran; and they went
forth to go into the land of Canaan; and into the land of Canaan they came.
6And Abram passed through the land unto
the place of Sichem, unto the plain of Moreh. And the Canaanite was then in the land. 7And
the Lord appeared unto Abram, and said, Unto thy seed
will I give this land: and there builded he an altar
unto the Lord, who appeared unto him. 8And he removed from thence
unto a mountain on the east of Bethel, and pitched his tent, having
Bethel on the west, and Hai on the east: and there he
builded an altar unto the Lord, and called upon the
name of the Lord. 9And Abram journeyed, going on still toward the
south.
10And there was a famine in the land: and
Abram went down into Egypt to sojourn there; for the famine was grievous in the land.
Gen. 17:1-14.
The Covenant of Circumcision
And when Abram was
ninety years old and nine, the Lord appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am
the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect. 2And I will make
my covenant between me and thee, and will multiply thee exceedingly. 3And
Abram fell on his face: and God talked with him, saying, 4As for me,
behold, my covenant is with thee, and thou shalt be a father of many
nations. 5Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but thy
name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee. 6And
I will make thee exceeding fruitful, and I will make nations of thee, and kings
shall come out of thee. 7And I will establish my covenant between me
and thee and thy seed after thee in their generations for an everlasting
covenant, to be a God unto thee, and to thy seed after thee. 8And I
will give unto thee, and to thy seed after thee, the
land wherein thou art a stranger, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting
possession; and I will be their God.
9And God said unto Abraham, Thou shalt
keep my covenant therefore, thou, and thy seed after thee in their generations.
10This is my covenant, which ye shall keep, between me and
you and thy seed after thee; Every man child among you
shall be circumcised. 11And ye shall circumcise the flesh of your
foreskin; and it shall be a token of the covenant betwixt me and you. 12And
he that is eight days old shall be circumcised among you, every man child in
your generations, he that is born in the house, or bought with money of any
stranger, which is not of thy seed. 13He that is born in thy
house, and he that is bought with thy money, must needs
be circumcised: and my covenant shall be in your flesh for an everlasting covenant.
14And the uncircumcised man child whose flesh of his foreskin is not
circumcised, that soul shall be cut off from his people; he hath broken my
covenant.
Ex.
19:1-13. At Mount Sinai
In the third month,
when the children of Israel were gone forth out of the land of Egypt, the same
day came they into the wilderness of Sinai. 2For they were
departed from Rephidim, and were come to the
desert of Sinai, and had pitched in the wilderness; and there Israel camped
before the mount. 3And Moses went up unto God, and the Lord called
unto him out of the mountain, saying, Thus shalt thou say to the house of
Jacob, and tell the children of Israel; 4Ye have seen what I did
unto the Egyptians, and how I bare you on eagles’ wings, and brought you
unto myself. 5Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and
keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all
people: for all the earth is mine: 6And ye shall be unto me a
kingdom of priests, and an holy nation. These are
the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel.
7And Moses came and called for the
elders of the people, and laid before their faces all these words which the
Lord commanded him. 8And all the people answered together, and said,
All that the Lord hath spoken we will do. And Moses returned the words of the
people unto the Lord. 9And the Lord said unto Moses, Lo, I come unto
thee in a thick cloud, that the people may hear when I
speak with thee, and believe thee for ever. And Moses
told the words of the people unto the Lord.
10And the Lord said unto Moses, Go unto
the people, and sanctify them to day and to morrow,
and let them wash their clothes, 11And be ready against the third
day: for the third day the Lord will come down in the sight of all the people
upon mount Sinai. 12And thou shalt set
bounds unto the people round about, saying, Take heed to yourselves, that ye
go not up into the mount, or touch the border of it: whosoever toucheth the mount shall be surely put to death: 13There
shall not an hand touch it, but he shall surely be stoned, or shot through;
whether it be beast or man, it shall not live: when the trumpet soundeth long, they shall come up to the mount.
Ex.
24:1-8. The Covenant Confirmed
And he said unto
Moses, Come up unto the Lord, thou, and Aaron, Nadab,
and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel; and
worship ye afar off. 2And Moses alone shall come near the Lord: but
they shall not come nigh; neither shall the people go up with him.
3And Moses came and told the people all
the words of the Lord, and all the judgments: and all the people answered with
one voice, and said, All the words which the Lord hath
said will we do. 4And Moses wrote all the words of the Lord, and rose up early in the morning, and builded
an altar under the hill, and twelve pillars, according to the twelve tribes of
Israel. 5And he sent young men of the children of Israel, which
offered burnt offerings, and sacrificed peace offerings of oxen unto the Lord. 6And
Moses took half of the blood, and put it in basins; and half of the
blood he sprinkled on the altar. 7And he took the book of the
covenant, and read in the audience of the people: and they said, All that the Lord hath said will we do, and be obedient. 8And
Moses took the blood, and sprinkled it on the people, and said, Behold
the blood of the covenant, which the Lord hath made with you concerning all
these words.
The New Covenant or New Testament
Mk. 14:22-25. The Last Supper
22 And while they were still at table, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, Take this; this is my body. 23 Then he took a cup, and offered thanks, and gave it to them, and they all drank of it. And he said, 24 This is my blood of the new testament, shed for many. 25 I tell you truthfully, I shall not drink of this fruit of the vine again, until the day when I drink it with you, new wine, in the kingdom of God.3
